The first of a series of joke books compiled by Cerf, the founder of Random House publishers, Try and Stop Me sold over one million copies in the first two years of publication. The copyright on this book is dated 1944 and the date on the cover is New York, 1945. It was published by Simon & Schuster, 1945, in accordance with the Wartime Production Rules. This first edition hardcover book with 380 pages has a beige cover with red and gold on the spine.
